“Vishwaroopam” is an ambitious project for an actor. What If that actor is encyclopedia of Indian cinema, one can imagine the magnitude of the movie “Vishwaroopam”. Kamal Hassan again left no stone unturned in bringing alive his dream. And Vishwaroopam released amidst controversies earlier due to proposed DTH release by the actor and now the ban in Tamilnadu due to the objections by some Muslim communities.
Plot: Story begins with Nirupama(pooja kumar) spying her husband Viswanath( A dance Master played by Kamal Hassan) doubting that her husband is looking at Ashmita (Andreah), his student. That petty Spy operation leads to some devastating mission. Now who is this Viswanath…what is his connection with the terrorist by name Wasim Abdul Kashmiri(Again KamalHassan) ? What is the dreadful mission that’s gonna effect NYC much severe than Hiroshima?
Now Over to Afghanistan…
We have seen many Indian films that dealt with Terrorism as the theme. But This one goes straight into sands of Afghanistan. As Kamal Hassan himself plays the Jihad, We travel to the Afghan land to witness the massacre that happened there. There are kids who dream of becoming doctors and engineers, but are forced to take up terrorism and there are many lives that are sacrificed in the name of war. Movie cleverly sympathizes both sides of war. So there’s big episode in Afghanistan, where you see a shoot out mission and also suicide bomber attacking American troops. And we get to see the families and their pains. And in an interview Kamal told that an artificial Afghan is built for most of the shoot. One should salute to the art director Ilayaraja and production designer Boontawee ‘Tor’ Taweepsas, as you don’t see any artificiality in them.
Then movie comes back to Newyork city where you get answers to many questions and some thrilling episodes that lead to climax.
We bow to your feet Kamal Hassan…
Kamal Hassan has scripted, directed and produced “Viswaroopam” besides carrying it on his shoulders by playing very prominent role in the film. Look at the transition from a slightly cowardly Viswanath to Abdul Kashmiri..and then to something still supreme ( Don’t wanna disclose it). You unknowingly smile at Viswanath’s attire and dialogue and admire Kamal Hassan for his brilliancy in every scene. Small things are taken care and such complicated story is made in understandable way. And smooth journey covering various phases in one man's life.
Pooja Kumar as his wife has some witty liners to make us laugh. Andrea Jeremiah plays tomboyish role. Rahul Bose is too good as another terrorist Omar. Shekar Kapoor is seen in good role as Jagadish.
Splendid Team work…
Shanker Ehsaan Loy’s efforts are seen in background score. Only one songs seems a song “Krishna Krishna” which is lyrically rich. There are other tunes in background and theme music is superb. And Technical departments are top notch and are in par with Hollywood film. Be it the shootout scenes or chases, you do believe them.
Drawbacks include some lag in second half..and excessive voilence
Drawbacks include some lag in second half..and excessive voilence
A must watch…
Yes this film is not for those who seek meaningless and unbelievable stunts broke by dream song sequences that followed by not so humorous cheap comedy skits. And yes this is not highly entertaining stuff but keeps you interested for sure. If you want to taste the reality that goes behind during many attacks happening in every part of world, you should go for this movie. Kamal Hassan...there is reason to call him a legend...and you should see his passion and pain he has taken to make this film.
Rating
75/100. By the way Movie ends with a signal that Vishwaroopam 2 is in store to begin.
Oh my god, did I miss any Kamal’s movie, I am signing off to recollect and watch them right away.
